Staking, mulch and the trunk flare
Most of the useful work happens close to the ground. Keep the base of your tree visible, protected, and free to grow.
Let the trunk move
Stake only where wind or an unstable root ball makes it necessary. Use broad, flexible ties and allow some movement.
Give the bark some room
Keep mulch off the trunk and avoid a mulch volcano. Check that the root flare remains visible after watering and settling.
Check ties each season
Remove supports once the tree can stand securely, usually after a growing season. Never let a tie tighten into growing bark.
Watch, then act
Look for damage, persistent wilt, or standing water. Ask a qualified local arborist for help when symptoms persist rather than guessing at fertilizer or treatment.
